Spring/Summer Catch Up

Published by Alex at 2:01 pm under music, performance, update

Well then. The past few months have been quite something. First of all, the big NYC concert went swimmingly. Huge enormous Thank-Yous to the Performance and Commissioning Club members (I couldn’t possibly have done it without you!!!), and to all of the stupendous musicians who pulled out all the stops for this performance. Just… wow.

A few highlights:

Lina Bahn premiering electric blue pantsuit. OMG, the girl can play! When I was writing this piece, I thought of it as a tango gone terribly wrong. But you know? It actually has an Irish accent! The percussive, knocking electronic sounds aren’t so much flamenco-esque now, as they are……a supercharged bodhran! It’s a very nice thing, that lilt…

Jane Rigler set New Skin on fire, I tell you - fire! If you think the flute is not a sexy instrument….you haven’t heard it like this. Seriously.

The concert itself was actually my first listen to Coyote Turns in it’s entirety. Neil, Ariana, Angela and Yves from Ne(x)tworks were fantastic - their playing was intense, focused, and most importantly, they clearly had a darn good time! There is a lot of emotional material to sort out in this music, which they understood and communicated.

On top of that concert, over the past couple of months saxophonist Brian Sacawa has taken Tourmaline and run with it - to the MATA Festival, the Look and Listen Festival, and a delightful performance at An Die Musik in Baltimore. He is a huge talent, so be sure to check him out in concert! Oh, and you should definitely pick up a copy of Brian’s new CD, American Voices.

Having finally tidied up the aftermath of the tornado that my life became (for the most part, ahem!), I am diving into the projects of summer. Stay tuned for news on that front, as well as info about events aplenty in the works for the 2007-2008 season!
