Mythimna Twilight
Rather than photograph the usual pile of loose, scribbly manuscript paper, here is a page of finished score, which the musicians will actually use in performance. The music changed so much inside the computer that my pencil and paper musings don’t even seem relevant anymore.
Mythimna Twilight is for my wonderful friends, guitarist Enrique Lop and saxophonist Carola Cuypers, who play together as Duo Cuypers/Lop. The piece is still so fresh that I’m not even totally sure what to say about it, but I can tell you that writing music for friends feels comfortable and relaxing to me. The title was inspired by photographs of Mythimna Harbor - like this one, taken by another friend:

Given that the Duo loves sailing, it seemed apropo - the music undulates between mellow, singing lines and rollicking, twirly gestures. Very watery. Saxophones (of various registers) and guitar sound surprisingly good together, and I am completely looking forward to hearing this music come to life!
Performances are happening soon! Duo C/L will be premiering Mythimna Twilight on April 11 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and then playing it again on April 17 in DC at the Kennedy Center. They are really, really fantastic musicians (Enrique is That Guy playing Luminoso on my CD, btw), so c’mon now!

Oh, and this is a fine read about creative process. I don’t know about you, but I am a big Andrew Bird fan!
