Packing for Denver

Published by Alex under music, update

Today I’m packing for a trip to Denver, CO, to attend the National Performing Arts Convention 2008. It’s quite a thing - performing arts organizations and artists of all shapes and sizes are gathering together to figure out how we can work more cohesively to create a sustainable future for the performing arts in the [...]

If Tchaikovsky were alive today…

Published by Alex under update

…he might have entered into his rather enviable circumstances by having a support page on his website. One never knows unless one asks, nicely.
Many thanks to Jonathan Matis, Director of the American Composers Forum DC Chapter for graciously providing nonprofit fiscal sponsorship. Tax deductions are fun!!

Seven Year Itch

Published by Alex under update

Okay! The shiny new website is up and running. It was definitely time for a makeover!
At some point last autumn, a couple months into managing livingroom.org, I made the foolhardy decision that I would redesign my website myself, and learn all the XHTML and CSS to do it right. So after reading up on these [...]

Crows in Barcelona

Published by Alex under music, performance, spain, update

Tomorrow night the group Barcelona Modern Project will play my piece Crows at Auditorio SGAE (Sociedad General De Autores Y Editores is the Spanish equivalent of ASCAP), in a program of otherwise all-Catalan composers. I’ve never met the BMP folks in person - they started up around the time I returned to the US at [...]

Hopeful Bits, and Pieces

Mythimna Twilight

Published by Alex under music, performance, update

Rather than photograph the usual pile of loose, scribbly manuscript paper, here is a page of finished score, which the musicians will actually use in performance. The music changed so much inside the computer that my pencil and paper musings don’t even seem relevant anymore.
Mythimna Twilight is for my wonderful friends, guitarist Enrique Lop [...]

Ponerse Al Dia, Spring Breaks

Published by Alex under fun, inspiration, update

Happy Spring everyone! How did that happen??
Back home and more or less de-jetlagged from 2 weeks in Spain – er, Catalunya! Bueníssimo as always…. A few days in Castellón, then to Barcelona for a visit with Los Austriacos Guapos, who are up to some most interesting and creative things. The view from their terraza looks [...]

Icebreaker: Tales of the Northwest

Published by Alex under music, performance, reviews, update

If the Seattle Icebreaker Fest hadn’t gone so well, I might have been more put off by the surreal morning of departure, which included Bill and I driving madly around the airport on a quest for the unmarked car rental place, and then my plane being several hours delayed because the “glue had to dry” [...]

Off to Seattle…

Published by Alex under music, update

Lots happening these days…..lots! Juggling multiple adventures in music composition (more details on that later), not to mention learning a few bits of technological geekery…. So of course I am running off to Seattle where I get to help break the ice. I think it will be lots of fun! Also looking forward to playing [...]
