program note

The juniper tree is considered a symbol of longevity, strength, athleticism, and fertility. The trees are widely dispersed throughout the northern hemisphere, and while they take numerous shapes and sizes, I am most familiar with the types used in bonsai. I think of this piece for shakuhachi as a sonic bonsai tree; a contemplative work, carefully grown and sculpted for a complex and beautiful instrument. Small in appearance, yet innately powerful.
